Here is an interesting analysis of the C.S.S. Alabama. Built in 1862, she went on a 22-month-long rampage through three oceans, burning or capturing 64 merchant vessels and a Union warship. Ultimately, she was cornered and destroyed in 1864 by the U.S.S. Kearsarge. She remained lost until discovered in 984 by the French navy. The wreck is legally owned by the United States, although it is located in French territorial waters. In 1989, the U.S. and France signed an agreement to protect the wreck jointly.
