Faulty Metal Detector Leads to Record-Breaking Gold Nugget Discovery

The discovery occurred after a treasure hunter arrived late to a rally, swapped a faulty modern detector for an old device, and located a 64.8-gram gold nugget 15 centimeters from the ground.

An amateur treasure hunter found a 64.8-gram gold nugget in Shropshire Hills, England, after arriving late to a gold detectorists’ rally. The find, which occurred in May of last year, could be worth between thirty and forty thousand pounds and is considered the largest ever recorded on English soil.

Richard Brock drove more than three hours from his home in Somerset to attend a rally organized on farmland near the village of Much Wenlock. By the time he arrived, about fifty detectors had already begun scanning the available fields.

The delay made Brock believe he had missed any significant opportunity. Even so, he decided to participate, despite facing technical problems with his state-of-the-art metal detector, which refused to function properly at that moment.
