Finders Keepers?

Here is a story from Vienna that is actually not all that uncommon. A contractor finds coins buried in a wall, floor or fireplace and a legal battle erupts over who gets the coins…the finder, the owner of the building or the family of the prior owner who did not know that the coins were there.

In the U.S. there is no uniform law that covers the finding of hoards. Most of these situations are governed by laws enacted by the various states. In England there is a national law that applies to buried treasure, but that is another story. Who will end up with the coins in this article will be a matter for the courts in Italy to figure out.
