Long-Lost ‘King of American Coins’ Could Be Worth $5 million, Auction House Says

(NEXSTAR) – One of the most coveted, rare coins ever struck by the U.S. Mint – a long-lost 1804 dollar – is expected to sell for millions at auction Sunday, according to auctioneers at Stack’s Bowers Galleries.

For decades, the coin’s very existence was unknown to professional coin experts, known as numismatists, who had only ever documented 15 1804 dollars, also known as the “King of American Coins.”

The 16th specimen was discovered in the private collection of a New York man named James A. Stack – no relation to the auction house – who had devoted his life to amassing as many of the coins created throughout American history as he could, according to Stack’s Bowers.
