Mystery of Jersey’s Celtic Treasure

Treasure & Maritime Mystery in Jersey. The World’s Largest Celtic Hoard. Out now in a Wreckwatch Magazine special issue for Spring 2025. And a Wreckwatch TV accompanying film.

With 70,000 silver coins & 11 gold neckrings, the Celtic hoard at Le Câtillon on Jersey in the Channel Islands is the largest in the world. It arrived around 54 BC when the sky was falling on the heads of the Coriosolitae tribe. Julius Caesar & Rome conquered all before them as they marched into northern France. The wealth of a tribe was put into ships & taken across the English Channel to Jersey.

But why such riches were buried & a king’s ransom never recovered in ancient times has never been cracked. Now, ‘x-ray vision’ into the soils has found a possible settlement & discovered that for millennia the area was sacred ancestral ground. Jersey was also never an isolated backwater & Wreckwatch reveals its colourful maritime past. Has one of the world’s great mysteries finally been cracked? Read the issue for free here to find out. The finders & scientists researching this mega-treasure share their thoughts in their own words.

Also don’t miss Wreckwatch TV’s video about the Câtillon Celtic hoard, the Gallic Wars, how it ended up hidden & how it was found by inspired metal detectorists Reg Mead & Richard Miles.

With special thanks to The Highlands Foundation in Jersey for supporting this special issue & to Allen Exploration for their ongoing sponsorship & friendship. And to Reg Mead & Richard Miles who discovered the hoard for sharing their amazing world.
