To commemorate the upcoming 300th Anniversary of the loss of the 1715 Fleet, the Fleet Society has purchased a Time Capsule which will be buried on Friday, July 31, 2015. Vero Beach has been chosen as the venue for the final resting place of the 1715 Fleet Society Time Capsule. The Indian River County Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Division, has offered their assistance in choosing the site for the capsule’s burial.
Allison McNeal, Director of Tourism – Indian River County Chamber of Commerce, is working with local officials to choose the best location for this historic item. “Indian River County is thrilled to be the host location and provide assistance for such a significant event in our County’s rich history,” said McNeal.
Ben Costello, one of three Directors of the Fleet Society, hopes that the Time Capsule will generate interest in the upcoming 300th Anniversary. “Residents of the Treasure Coast will have the opportunity to actually be chosen to place an item into the Time Capsule. Plans are under way to develop a strategy to accomplish that purpose,” he said.
The Time Capsule was purchased from Heritage Time Capsules located in Williamsville, NY. Heritage is a leading source for the production of Time Capsules. The 1715 Fleet Society Time Capsule is composed of composite material, is 16 ½ inches high and 16 inches in diameter. It is lightweight, watertight and is highly resistant to chemicals such as acids and alkalis. The Capsule features the logo of the 1715 Fleet Society.
A burial ceremony will be scheduled for Friday, July 31, 2015 at a site to be determined. The Capsule itself will be re-opened on July 31, 2115, the 400th Anniversary of the loss of the 1715 Fleet.
