The Trouble With Treasure

Those who attended our Vero Beach conference in January (2024) might recall that we had Carl Allen of Allen Exploration as one of our speakers. He spoke about his effort to salvage the Maravillas, a 17th-century wreck off the Bahamian Coast. In addition to his presentation, he brought along recently salvaged coins and artifacts which were a big hit with the attendees. Recently, our Society Librarian Dave Crooks (member #7) sent me an article highlighting something treasure seekers and salvagers have known for years … finding treasure is hard, but keeping it is harder. That is the trouble with treasure. In my short involvement with Shipwreck Treasure (about 25 years), I find it difficult to name one major wreck that did not involve litigation. The S.S. Central America, The Brother Jonathon, The Atocha, The Titanic, the 1715 Fleet, the list goes on and on.

Here is the latest wreck to add to this long and sad history of fighting over treasure. See it HERE. Many thanks to Dave Crooks for his continued diligence in searching for interesting articles on Fleet and non-Fleet topics.
