The Nossa Senhora do Cabo, a Portuguese treasure ship filled with gold and silver bullion, exotic diamonds and pearls, and other precious cargo, set sail from India in 1721 but was seized by pirates in the Madagascar.

According to the Smithsonian Magazine, after seizing the Nossa Senhora do Cabo, the pirates took the vessel to their hideout, where they plundered it for days, but were unable to retrieve all of its treasure. More than 300 years after the ship was sunk, researchers recovered over 3,300 items from the shipwreck, including gold coins, ceramic fragments, and religious sculptures such as an ivory plaque with the words INRI etched into it in gold letters. This is an acronym for the Latin phrase “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”
