Archaeologists have discovered a shipwreck dating back roughly 2,100 years off the coast of Sicily, reportedly revealing hundreds of ancient cargo vessels that remain in remarkable condition. The site sits about three miles from Mazara del Vallo, which is a city positioned 50 miles southwest of Palermo.
As reported by FOX News, the Italian Ministry of Culture announced this find. The wreck was reportedly located during a collaborative inspection conducted by Carabinieri diving units and Italian cultural heritage officials. This mission was prompted after private citizens reported the location to authorities.
The Italian divers reached the site at a depth of about 150 feet. Officials released a translated statement confirming the contents of the debris field. “Hundreds of amphorae, predominantly of the Dressel 1A type, are present on the seabed, along with two lead anchor stocks and another structure made of the same material,” officials said in the statement.
