A 303 year old cannon from the 1715 Fleet was recovered and brought to the surface of the Atlantic Ocean on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Fisherman’s Wharf in Fort Pierce, Florida. It is the first cannon to be recovered in the last 30-35 years. The cannon will be restored, a process that takes about three years, and placed on display at Melody Lane Fishing Pier.
The cannon was discovered in just 20 feet of water at the Sandy Point wreck site, which is just north of Fort Pierce. Capt. John Brandon of Queens Jewels LLC and Capt. Dan Porter of Maritime Research and Recovery are credited with the discovery. The recovery of the cannon is a collaboration between the Keep Fort Pierce Beautiful Advisory Board and the Fort Pierce Lions Club.
The restoration of the cannon will take place about 3 years and will be put on display in the Plaza at Melody Lane Fishing Pier. Information provided by TC Palm.
