Today marks the 298th anniversary of the 1715 Fleet Disaster. In commemorating this event we must always be mindful of the human tragedy that underlines the history and archaeology we so eagerly study. In two years many of us will be gathered at Florida’s treasure coast to pay respectful homage to the many lives lost on this day. We must never forget those whose lives were lost or forever altered by this catastrophe. That is why this event is to be commemorated and not, as some say, celebrated.
