DATELINE: Wabasso, Florida Fleet Society Member Finds Trove of Coins

When it comes to finding Spanish treasure, Fleet Society member Jonah Martinez (member #66) of Port St. Lucie, Florida is no stranger. In 2015, he was part of a crew that found one of the largest caches of Spanish gold coins ever found. So, it was no surprise to hear that once again Jonah’s talent for finding lost treasure has lead him to another recovery. This time he found a trove of 22 Spanish pieces of eight. The coins were part of a vast treasure that was lost when the ships transporting the treasure fell victim to a massive hurricane off of the east coast of Florida in July, 1715.

Jonah’s coins were found on Friday, February 21st, not far from Wabasso Beach, Florida. The find confirms that the 1715 Fleet is still giving up its treasure, albeit grudgingly. We hope that this is just the beginning of Jonah’s good luck for 2020.
