Our Treasure of the Month for February is a one escudo (Charles II) from the 1972 Schulman Sale. This coin is somewhat unique because it is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued in Paris by the Davis and Clark Company on January 2, 1973. A loose translation indicates that this coin was Lot 34 and weighed 3.4 g, which is correct for a one escudo gold piece. A close up view of this coin shows that it is undated, but exhibits a full obverse shield and a full box cross on the reverse. Just why this particular coin ended up in Paris and was authenticated by Davis and Clark will probably remain a mystery. However, it is still a fantastic piece with a great provenience worthy of being featured as our Treasure of the Month.
