From the Fleet Society Archives — August 9, 1973 (Part 1)

In the late 1960s, Miss Rossetter purchased an eight escudos gold coin from the Real Eight Company. The coin was minted in Mexico City and was dated 1713. It had a full mint mark and date visible. According to inventory records held by the Real Eight Company, the coin was number AA21.

In September 1969, the Real Eight Company updated its inventory, and coin number AA21 was not listed. This is evidence that the coin sold to Miss Rossetter occurred sometime before 1969. However, coins numbered AA20 and AA22 were still in the inventory. These coins were listed as from the Mexico City mint, both dated 1713. The price ascribed to both of these coins was $1,050. So, it is very likely that the coin sold to Miss Rossetter was for $1,050.

The letter (below) from Harry E. Cannon, Chairman of the Board for the Real Eight Company, indicates that as of July 18, 1973, the coin was appraised at $2,850. The letter written by Harry E. Cannon was sent to Miss Rossetter at her request.
