Gold Coin Analysis Solves the 400-Year-Old Mystery of a Long-Lost Dutch Ship

Thirty years ago, divers off the Devon coast of southwest England found a glint of gold in the sand. A small ingot, then 17 coins, then hundreds more.

Nobody knew whose ship had carried them there, where it had come from, or why it had sunk so close to shore. That question has finally been answered.

Archival records pulled from centuries-old legal files in London have identified the wreck as the Dutch trading vessel Dom van Keulen. The ship was lost in December 1633 while carrying a hold full of gold from Morocco to Amsterdam.
