(NewsNation) — Oceanographer Dr. David Gallo says archaeologists will use the latest technology to determine how a 16th-century merchant vessel ended up more than 8,000 feet down on the French seafloor.
The French military discovered the shipwreck last year while doing sonar investigations. Robotic devices are expected to collect samples of the ship’s earthenware cargo and compile data that will help create a “digital twin” of the ship.
“Once you do the digital twin, you can take that database, bring it back to forensic scientists and engineers, and study it in the laboratory,” Gallo told “Jesse Weber Live” on Tuesday. “Then we’ll have some good idea why this went down.”
