Treasure of the Month – August 2015

The Treasure of the Month for August 2015 is the “Tricentennial Royal.” Named for the 300th Anniversary of the loss of the 1715 Fleet, this superior fully dated 1715 eight escudos gold Royal was found on the Douglass Beach site near Fort Pierce, Florida, on June 17, 2015.

The discovery of this Royal was not announced until Tuesday, July 28th, 2015 at a press conference in Sebastian, Florida. It was found by Eric Schmitt, whose family is a subcontractor of Queens Jewels, LLC.

Royals are exceptionally rare. According to some, there are no more than a few dozen Fleet-related Royals accounted for. This one is special because it bears a 1715 date, the year in which the Fleet was lost.
