While the hypothesis advanced by the finders of this object is intriguing and certainly has merit, it is still the subject of ongoing research.

Jorge and I are a little surprised that no-one in 40+ years has bothered to confirm it is 17th (not 19th or 20th) century metal. Once we have a date, then we can start guessing.
