The first shipwrecks attacked by the real pirates of the Caribbean have been discovered by a Brit diver after they were sunk in the Bahamas 300 years ago.
The sunken husks have been linked to notorious pirates Blackbeard and Calico Jack Rackham, who ruled the seas from the 1690s to the 1720s.
The expedition – the first of its kind – has unearthed an incredible six wrecks at the bottom of shark-riddled Bahamas bay.
Three of the ships have been traced to the “golden age of piracy” when pirates raided vessels for cargo before setting them on fire and sinking them to the bottom of the sea.
Pirate King, Henry Avery raided a ship of its gold and silver before torching the vessel and sinking it off the coast of Nassau.
The plunder of the Fancy – a 46-gun ship seized by the pirate lord – was the greatest heist of the high seas.
Avery captured a booty of diamonds, gold and sapphires worth an estimated £85million in today’s money.
Now, a team headed by Brit marine archaeologist Dr Sean Kingsley and Bahamian Dr Michael Pateman may have discovered the charred remains of this very ship.
