A 1944 ship carrying millions of Saudi silver riyals sank after a German submarine attack. Decades later, over one million coins were recovered, while much remains underwater.

A US ship carrying around 3 million Saudi silver riyals sank during World War II in the Arabian Sea. The SS John Barry was torpedoed by the German submarine in August 1944, while it was carrying the coins to Saudi Arabia. The shipment of the currency had been secretly organized by the Saudi Arabia government as the coins were minted in Philadelphia to pay the workers in the kingdom’s oil industry. About five decades later a substantial amount of this cargo of silver was recovered from the sunken ship, but it is thought that most of the valuable coins remain submerged under the sea.
