GEORGETOWN — Six Spanish ships and 600 settlers were making their way toward Winyah Bay.

Their goal was to establish one of the first European settlements in North America. The fleet was led by explorer Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon, who had permission from the Spanish crown to establish a colony.
