This Day In Fleet History – June 8, 1708

British Captain Charles Wagers ambushes a Spanish Treasure Fleet near Cartagena during the War of Spanish Succession. Sunk in the battle was the San Jose which was laden with gold, silver, and precious gems which was to be used by the Spanish government to finance the war. The San Jose was found in November 2015 in 600 meters of water by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHO). It has yet to be salvaged.
