Treasure of the Month – March 2015

1715 Fleet Society Treasure of the Month 2015

The Treasure of the Month for March 2015 is this sharp little bracelet consisting of a replica of a Mexico eight escudos gold piece, and four Mexico silver reales.

This bracelet was formerly owned by an employee of the Real Eight Company who acquired it in the early 1970s. It has been in her possession since that time and only recently did it come on the market.

The Real Eight Company did create a line of replica treasure jewelry, which was sold at the Real Eight Museum of Sunken Treasure in Cape Canaveral, just north of Cocoa Beach. The jewelry sold in the museum was made with coins that were cast from molds made from actual silver cobs and gold doubloons. An original brochure is shown in the image below, and described in the History of the Real Eight through Documents and Letters, on this site.

Our featured treasure, however, is made with real silver reales. It is believed that this bracelet was specially made by the Real Eight Company as a presentation piece.

Wish I could purchase the duplicates. I own the 1/2 reale. My Aunt Elva McArdle, long time manager of the Real Eight Museum, gave it to me.

  2. Gay. Hello and thank you for your e mail. Looks like the 1/2 reales is a copy of yours. Interesting because I had the bracelet looked at by someone who confirmed that the coins were all original. The others clearly are. But, you have the original 1/2 reales. Thanks for pointing this out.
