Here is an interesting article published on June 10 by Cambridge University Press. It is an archaeological assessment of coins from the San Jose, which was sunk in 1708 during the War of Spanish Succession. The coins that were studied were from images of the coins in situ. These coins bear a striking resemblance to those recovered from the 1715 Fleet. The San Jose is a remarkable time capsule, and when coins are recovered, it will open a new chapter in the history of Spanish colonial coins minted in the New World. It should be noted that author Julian Sancton has recently written a book on the San Jose. Julian will be one of our speakers at our upcoming conference in Vero Beach in January 2026. His book will not be available for purchase until the end of January, but at the conference, he will be able to provide more information on the contents of the book and where it can be obtained. In the meantime, enjoy the article here.
