What some call the “holy grail” of shipwrecks has been found off the port city of Cartagena, Columbia. The San Jose, a Spanish Galleon, has recently been found and is estimated to hold more than $1 Billion in gold, silver, gems and jewelry collected in the South American Colonies before 1708.
The ship, sunk by the British during the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714), was on its way back to Spain to help finance that war.
The wreck site is being explored by the government of Columbia which intends to build a museum in Cartagena to house the additional treasure after its recovery.
