From the Fleet Society Archives — January, 1962

Coins magazine, a staple of the numismatic community, recently announced that it was ceasing publication after 68 years. The cover of the first issue of Coins in January 1962 had a shipwreck/treasure theme so we thought it would be fitting to mention it here. We have a copy of this in our archive collection. The magazine featured an article on the legacy of treasure, specifically Spanish silver in the New World. Founded in 1955, the original magazine went through several name changes before it became known simply as Coins in 1962. It was actually the first coin publication that had a national distribution. It has been credited with featuring many fine articles from prominent authorities in the field of Numismatics.
