Members Comment on Coin Theft

Last week we published a story about the theft of some 50 gold coins which were part of a recovery that went unreported in 2015. The coins were only recently recovered but sent shock waves throughout the shipwreck community. We reached out to some Fleet Society members for comment. Here is what we received:

“1715 Fleet – Queen’s Jewels, LLC is the US District Courts Custodian and exclusive salvaging company for the historic 1715 Treasure Fleet. The company has taken this matter very seriously and has worked very closely with law enforcement and the state of Florida regarding this matter. The recovered coins are now going through the proper process for legal adjudication.” ~ Sal Gutuso, Director of Operations for 1715 Fleet, Queen’s Jewels, LLC

“I appreciate that law enforcement has successfully recovered most of the stolen coins and is pursuing the other unaccounted-for coins … preserving the history of the people of Florida. Their diligent efforts help all of the salvagers.” ~ Dave Crooks, Official Librarian for the 1715 Fleet Society

“All the subcontractors sign contracts and have contractual obligations to properly document any artifacts and treasure.” ~ Rob Westrick, Senior Marine Archaeologist and Principal Investigator for Coastal Environments Inc.

“I was shocked and saddened to read the news report about the theft of a large quantity of treasure and artifacts by the accused in this case. I am glad to see that there was full cooperation with the authorities by all concerned parties which ended in the recovery of a large portion of the missing treasure Congratulations to all of the law enforcement agencies for a job well done.” ~ Jim Wilson, 1715 Fleet Society Regional Director for The Treasure Coast Region

“Recent events emphasized the importance of Pedigree research which will increase the value of coins pedigreed to the early Real Eight company sales. The old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words is true and the pedigree is the certification. Good work to all involved in the pursuit of justice.” ~ Charlie Winn, 1715 Flkeet Society Advisory Board Pedigree Specialist
