DATELINE: Sarasota, Florida NGC Posts Tricentennial Coins

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) has announced the creation of an online image gallery of nearly 300 rare and high grade coins salvaged in 2015 from the wreck site of the 1715 Treasure Fleet.  Known as the “Tricentennial Hoard,”  these coins were actually recovered on the 300th anniversary of the loss of the Fleet. In one of the greatest ironies in history, Queens Jewels LLC  recovered several hundred gold coins from the Spanish Colonial Mints of Columbia, Mexico and Peru on July 30-31, 2015, 300 years ago to the day when the great Fleet was destroyed in a hurricane.

NGC reports that its certification lists the attribution and grade of each coin and lists the shipwreck provenance. The coin images are of exceptional quality and a visit to the website is must, especially for scholars looking to enhance their knowledge of these iconic coins.
