As many of you know, we recently added Thijs Schilder as our newest Advisory Board. Thijs is from the Netherlands, and his position on the Advisory Board is European Outreach and Expansion, which focuses on enlarging the Fleet Society’s footprint in Europe. He has been busy implementing his plan for accomplishing his mission. He is also quite adept at producing informational videos. Recently, he acquired one of the much-coveted “Cannon Coins” from the famous “Cannon Find” of 2010. On July 11, 2010, treasure salvors working on the Corrigan’s wreck site just north of Vero Beach recovered a heavily encrusted bronze swivel gun. While conserving the artifact, specialists found gold and silver coins in the cannon’s breech. Tucked away in the cannon were approximately 50 gold coins along with approximately 40 silver coins. Any coin attributed to this find is a great prize for any collector.
Thijs’ coin is one of the finest recovered from the cannon. As shown in the video below, it is a four reales with an almost complete shield and cross. A beautiful specimen from this historic recovery. Congratulations Thijs!
