Major New Fleet Publication Now Available

On February 23, 2025, we announced that a new publication dealing with the 1715 Fleet would be forthcoming. We didn’t give many details then as we wanted to save those particulars for when we announced the book’s availability. We can now share some of those specifics.

In 2021, the crew of the Mighty Mo had no idea that they would discover approximately ten pounds of worked silver artifacts all in a small area. “Worked silver” refers to silver that has been fashioned by a silversmith using techniques such as hammering, bending, or shaping into ornamental or decorative items. This discovery would yield artifacts not yet seen on the 1715 Fleet. It would also raise many questions.

Written by Sal Guttuso and Mike Perna, the goal of this publication is to answer some of the many questions raised by this unique discovery. In addition, this publication seeks to provide a reference point for this discovery, which can be used in future research, educational programming, and public enjoyment. This book will identify, photograph, and preserve the collection in its entirety.

Sal Guttuso is currently the Operations Director of 1715 Fleet-Queens Jewels, LLC. He recently authored a book containing his seminal study on the gold coins of the Tricentennial discovery. This publication instantly sold out. Mike Perna is the Captain of the Mighty Mo and was involved in the discovery and recovery of the silver chest, which is the subject matter of this book. These two gentlemen, who know the most about the silver treasure chest, have collaborated to produce this publication, which is a must-have for any Fleet library.

A part of this collection resides with the State of Florida, with the remainder held in private hands. A collection of this size provides a wealth of information on the worked silver of the Spanish Colonial period. Nothing quite like this has ever been found on the wreck sites of the 1715 Fleet. So, it remains a one-of-a-kind discovery.
