DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – One of the most well-known American treasure hunters was from the Miami Valley.

Wagner moved from Miamisburg to Florida in the late 1940’s and is credited with the discovery of the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet Wreck. Officials said eleven of the twelve Spanish galleons in the fleet had sunk off the east coast during a hurricane.
Wagner and his team, which included another famous treasure hunter, Mel Fisher, discovered the following: gold, silver and precious Chinese porcelain.
“At the time this treasure was valued at nearly 5 million dollars, but today would be worth around 52 million dollars. He is recognized by his peers as the first modern treasure hunter in North America and he started the recovery of many more millions of dollars in sunken treasure along Florida’s coastline,” wrote the Miamisburg Historical Society.
