Return to the Housatonic

The USS Housatonic, a blockader, has the distinction of being the first ship ever sunk by a submarine during war. It was part of the blockade of Charleston harbor during the Civil War. It was sunk by the first combat submarine, the CSS H. L. Hunley. The Hunley was lost in 1864, found in 1995, and recovered in 2000. The Housatonic is still out there buried in mud. Here is an update on efforts to learn more about its sinking.
