From the Fleet Society Archives — September 21, 1976

It was reported in local newspapers that about $750,000.00 worth of gold and jewelry was stolen from the Museum of Sunken Treasure according to authorities. Police Chief Bob Tweed acknowledged that the actual value was hard to determine. “Many of the objects are listed as priceless because of their rarity and Historic Background,” he said. It was reported that the thieves forced open an outside door and then “selectively stole” jewelry, a chest of gold and silver coins, and a rare 11-foot-long gold chain. It was also stated that although the thieves were not professionals, they nevertheless knew what to take. There was no night watchman at the museum and the burglar alarm system on the door where the thieves entered automatically shut off as soon as the door was closed.

(NOTE: This burglary hastened the demise of the museum which closed shortly thereafter.)
