Advisory Board Member, Charlie Winn (Coin Pedigree & Provenance, Member #136), has announced the publication of a new book titled “The Middle East Collection Volume I.” Karen McKee, Numismatic Analyst, stated that, “This is a very interesting numismatic study regarding a collection of 197 specimens assembled by an unnamed gentleman over a span of 30 years. The coins were hand-struck in Mexico City in the late 17th and early 18th centuries and range in date from circa 1674 to 1733. Full dates of 1689 to 1730 are present in this collection as well. Half of these specimens fall within the period of the 1715 Plate Fleet recoveries.”
The book consists of 56 pages with images of all 197 coins that make up the “Middle East Collection.” Whether or not any of these coins may have originated in the 1715 Fleet, we will never know. But they certainly represent a group worth collecting. Charlie’s decision to investigate and study this small group of coins is a testament to his dedication to advancing knowledge of Fleet-era coins from the Mexico City mint.
