Our Treasure of the Month for July is a dazzling display of silver eight and four Reales from the Spanish colonial mint at Mexico City. No Independence Day fireworks can match these coins for eye-popping appeal. From a private collection, these beauties display the characteristics of coins minted at the Mexico City mint. Irregular shapes, hammer marks, blunted edges, and incomplete die impressions are apparent. To see more examples of Mexican cob coinage with these unique features visit the 1715 Fleet Society Research Collection.
