Our featured treasure for September is this 40-coin aggregate or “clump” which was recently part of a Stacks Bowers Auction in August 2024 as Lot # 44295. Over the years we have featured EO’s (Encrusted Objects) on numerous occasions due in large measure to their mysterious attractiveness. Our current subject is no exception. This is a massive item weighing in at 1645.37 grams, or 3.627 pounds. The clump consists mainly of 8 reales with a few 4 reales mixed in.

This clump, however, is slightly different from others we have seen. The red and brown encrustation contains, in addition to shells, rope or basket fibers.

This item sold for $43,200.00 (which includes buyers fee).
Here is a list of encrusted objects previously featured in prior Treasures of the Month:
- February 2012 – 40-coin clump.
- January 2015 – Encrusted sword.
- February 2015 – 100-coin clump consisting of 1 reales and ½ reales.
- October 2015 – 54-coin clump.
- April 2018 – 15-coin clump.
- May 2020 – 12-coin clump.
- March 2021 – 55.9-pound clump from the State of Florida Collection.

Going forward I am sure that we will continue highlighting these most fascinating artifacts.
